The trademarked name ‘Kardashian’ has been a source of contention for the family and Blac Chyna. Robert Kardashian, Kardashian Kollection Home, Kourtney Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian are only some of the trademark names that belong to the infamous Kardashians. Everywhere you turn there is a Kardashian making headlines for a new product or a new endeavor, but this time the headline is over a trademark dispute.
The Kardashians are claiming they will, “suffer damage, including irreparable injury, to their reputation and goodwill,” if Blac Chyna is allowed to register the mark ‘Angela Renee Kardashian.’ Which brings up another question that gets asked often: “Can I register my own name as a trademark?”
A trademark is any word, name, symbol, or device or combination thereof that distinguishes and identifies the sources of those goods/services. If the name ‘Angela Renee Kardashian’ is found to be unique and pervasive enough in commerce to make it distinct then the there is a likelihood of registering the mark though not without opposition. If there is a a likelihood of confusion or deception then the odds are against a registration for that trademark name.
It will be interesting to see the outcome of this legal fight. After all, Angela Renee Kardashian will be her name IF she does in fact marry Robert Kardashian, but it is not quite her name yet.
